1 〔妨げになるもの〕 a person [thing] that is an obstacle [a hindrance, an impediment, an obstruction, a stumbling block]; 〔足手まとい〕 a person [thing] that is an encumbrance [a drag].

●教育[進歩]をはばむじゃま者 a barrier [an obstacle] to education [progress].

●じゃま者を除く remove [get rid of] an obstacle; get obstacles out of the way.

●込んだ車内ではスキーやリュックはじゃま者だ. Skis and backpacks are nuisances inside a crowded train.

2 〔厄介物[者]〕 a nuisance; a bore.

●彼は自分がじゃま者と感じて出ていった. He felt himself in the way and left.

・じゃま者は消せ. Get rid of anyone who stands in the way.

邪魔者扱い

●人をじゃま者扱いにする treat sb as a nuisance [meddler]

・自動車の普及で路面電車がじゃま者扱いされるようになった. With the spread of automobile use, streetcars came to be treated as nuisances.
